Day #77: Little Nemo and King Morpheus' Battleship

"Little Nemo in Slumberland" dated March 31, 1907:

This strip continues the pirate fun, but this time, the kids get to enjoy a little game of dress-up! It's a jovial interlude between the threats of our the previous two strips and the cannonball fire at the end of this one! - 1/15

The fact that the Pirate Captain is willing to let the trio into his secret stash of jewels and gold really emphasizes how fearful he is of Flip and his connections. - 2/15

I've wondered in the past if Flip's boldness is ever going to get him in trouble, but it really doesn't seem like it here… everyone seems terrified of his potential power and he knows it: "It's an honor to de captain to have us go in" - 3/15

I really like how the tables of pretty much completely turned here and now Nemo and the Princess are following Flip's lead almost entirely. They play dress-up because he suggests it and even ask him what he thinks they should do with the jewels. - 4/15

They've clearly recognized that Flip is "at home" here and knows how this part of Slumberland works… It's the smart thing to do to let him take the lead. - 5/15

That the Princess so easily recognizes this, and knows that she should give Flip the reigns a bit here, just goes to show her strong character/how great a leader she actually is… - 6/15

She could get huffy and demand they do things her way, but she knows Flip would do a better job at this point and time, so try to stop it? That's not to suggest she gives up the role entirely; she still maintains a level-headedness to support Flip's temporary leadership. - 7/15

She's the one who offers the suggestion about the Captain's fear of them in panel 1 (similar lettering to yesterday) and, before she is distracted by the jewels, she is the one reminding the other two that they were stolen property, as well. - 8/15

In panel 4, we have a really cool moment between the Princess and Flip that demonstrates how far their relationship has come (even if it's a begrudging one)… - 9/15

The Princess sort of laughs at Nemo she says to Flip, "Nemo doesn't know that we may never see home again…does he Flip?". By speaking to Flip, she's almost inviting him to join in the joke against Nemo. - 10/15

But, alternatively, it could be read as her really asking Flip to contradict her thinking (sort of like a "they wouldn't do that, would they?") because she *wants* the opposite to be true. - 11/15

If we take this reading (which is the one that I like), then Flips offer of reassurance is exactly what both other parties need to help them calm down… right before the first cannonball breaks through the ship. - 12/15

Again, the pair look to Flip (not the pirates that have come begging for their help) as to what they should do with the clothes. Flip's answer is, of course, classic Flip. - 13/15

I mean, it isn't REALLY stealing when it's already stolen, right? … - 14/15

This is my reading of "Little Nemo in Slumberland" #77. What's yours? - 15/15
