Another strip, another stick of dynamite "threatening" to inflict comic harm on our cast of friends. - 1/12
I'll admit. I'm not a fan of this strip… it involves Impie stealing a monster stick of dynamite, refusing to give it back, intentionally striking a match (which came from where exactly?), and finally blowing up the temple of rest and part of Slumberland proper. - 2/12
I mean… there is absolutely no intrinsic motivation that I can determine for this act beyond the intent and delight in pure chaos. - 3/12
As Nemo, Flip, Slivvers, and Blutch chase Impie across the page from panel to panel I found myself become tired of the repetition… the chase is really all there is to this strip. - 4/12
The "will they or wont they" element isn't all that interesting, even if jumping into the lake demonstrates a clever approach to trying to solve the problem created by Impie's shenanigans. - 5/12
I will say this though. Panel 10 gave me a bit of a fright… - 6/12
We have seen in the past that the lives and well-being of our favourite characters are never truly in doubt… death is not a concept that seems to hold sway in Slumberland and so I've grown very accustomed to shrugging off any danger they might find themselves in. - 7/12
That said, I feel like if there was ever a character that McCay would knock-off from the strip unceremoniously through the sort of physical violence that wouldn't scratch other characters, it would be Impie. - 8/12
For that reason… I actually had a moment of true worry. I immediately went back to panel 9 and took comfort in the fact that Impie was depicted and depicted as *whole* as he was being blown away by the blast of dynamite. - 9/12
Thankfully, McCay doesn’t leave Impie's safety up in the air for too long as Figures notices him a ways away on the pillars and tells the gang. - 10/12
Even if Flip doesn't actually understand and continues to think Impie has perished. - 11/12
This is my reading of "Little Nemo in Slumberland" #470. What's yours? - 12/12
