Day #434: Pill Pontificates on a Pulverized Platform

"Little Nemo in Slumberland" dated October 26, 1924:

I'm sorry… I couldn't resist the alliterative title that I gave today's strip! Since today's gag rests entirely on the irony of a man blabbering on about political platforms only to have the one he's on knocked down, it was too good to pass up. - 1/14

Honestly, Flip and the boys probably did everyone a favour… it really didn't seem like Dr. Pills's talk was going anywhere. I mean, sure, he said platform a bunch… but there was no substance to what he was saying. - 2/14

Of course, this is by design. If the gag wasn't obvious enough just by it's visual appeal then hopefully the kiddos would've made the connection after hearing him talk about platforms for two panels. - 3/14

The penultimate panel is hilariously destructive. I enjoy the upturned boards, everyone is strange poses, and the Princess' reaction, very much! - 4/14

Now, is there anyone to blame for this? Well.. .sort of. Flip. - 5/14

Continuing Flip's insistence that he drive himself everywhere, He, Impie, Slivvers, and Blutch all climb into their own gravitator and speed away after the Princess and Nemo. - 6/14

Flip claims, "I know how to run this thing" in panel 2, but that is quickly proven false when he can't find the button to descend! - 7/14

The group does frantically search for the button (and find many "non-essential" ones, but don't find the one they need to descend, ultimately causing the crash at the platform. - 8/14

So, while Flip doesn't directly cause any trouble… he causes the crash indirectly through his ego and stubbornness! A common enough occurrence, but still quite funny. - 9/14

Now, Slivvers seems… different here. He is speaking with very high language and almost philosophical in panel 7. We continue to learn new things about him as the strip progresses… - 10/14

I also want to point out the Princess' comment about traffic. As we've noted continuously, it seems as if there are a lot more elements of these late strips that ground Slumberland to the waking world. - 11/14

If not the waking world, at least a more… mundane existence. - 12/14

I wonder if this is evidence of Nemo's maturing within the waking world… As he becomes more aware of what is going on around him in his day to day life, it would make sense that they are beginning to bleed into his dreams. - 13/14

This is my reading of "Little Nemo in Slumberland" #434. What's yours? - 14/14
