Day #420: And Flip was Trying to Learn the Tango

"In the Land of Wonderful Dreams" dated July 26, 1914:

Transcript of Tweets by @LittleNemo1905 (AUGUST 15, 2021):

I really don't have a ton to say about this strip… it's structure is one we're pretty used to… Impie causes trouble with Flip and Flip gets angry. - 1/12

That said, there are a couple interesting pieces… - 2/12

The first is that this is (as far as I can remember) the only time that Flip has actually tried to ditch Impie in an attempt to stick with the group. - 3/12

He leaves Impie outside to play with a calf and heads on into the palace to have his tango lesson with Nemo and the Princess. - 4/12

I can't help but read this as a continuation of Impie's racial caricature; a suggestion that he is better suited to being outside with the animals than he is inside with the group. - 5/12

Flip, meanwhile, finally has a special moment with the Princess… even though he is abysmally bad at dancing, he stills gets to dance with her for a few panels. - 6/12

In a similar way to what we saw yesterday, this is a callback to the beginning of #LittleNemo when Flip was desperate to be her playmate… it's a special moment for those who have been long-time readers, finally, a pay-off as the strip (seemingly) nears the end of its run. - 7/12

Of course, it all falls apart when Impie lassoes his foot and what follows is pretty standard fare for #LittleNemo. - 8/12

On a technical note, this will be the final strip read and facilitated through #TheComicStripLibrary as it marks the final entry in their catalogue. - 9/12

I want to say a huge thank you to Zachary Chavez and #TheComicStripLibrary for the assistance that they've provided up to this point! Using the public domain strips available on the site has made this project immensely easier and I'm very grateful! - 10/12

From this point forward, the strips will be hosted on the #WelcomeToSlumberland project website. The scans that I've acquired are pretty good and I'm hopeful that it won't cause any sort of interruption to our usual routine. - 11/12

This is my reading of "In the Land of Wonderful Dreams" #420. What's yours? - 12/12
