Day #403: Flip Educates a Diastacuteus Mastadonius

First off, I just wanted to apologize for missing yesterday. One of my best friends was (finally, after five COVID reschedules) able to get married on Friday! It was a great day, but I had no time to complete a reading. - 1/14

So, we kick back off with another dinosaur training strip! - 2/14

Obviously, this strip reflects McCay's narrative work with Gertie. Obviously, the dino looks different (those are some big ears) but the motions seems reminiscent of those Gertie performs! - 3/14

It wouldn't surprise me if the strip was practice for McCay; getting the lifting of the feet down pat before he brough it to life with Gertie. - 4/14

Gertie also focuses on McCay's ability as a dino trainer, so it's interesting to see Flip's abilities here. At the start of the strip (and the end) we see that Flip clearly knows what he's doing (our dino friend listens pretty well, actually). - 5/14

We get to see one trick early on (lifting his paw) and then, after Flip catches and comforts him from being pegged by Impie, Flip comes riding back in on the dino to capture Impie. - 6/14

It's true that Impie is the troublemaker here in this strip (the rock he tosses upsets our dino friend and he runs away), but I don't think he did it with malice in mind. - 7/14

Nemo defends Impie (even right as he wakes up in the final panel) and, to Flip's credit, he doesn't wallop Impie this time; he just has dino snatch him up so he can talk to him. - 8/14

I don't know why he isn't looking at Impie in the penultimate panel, but it sure *sounds* like he's speaking to him… any thoughts? Is he speaking to the group instead? - 9/14

There is an interesting spatial divide between tiers one/two and tiers three/four… the top two tiers are gridded in a traditional way, but the bottom two are only two panels (one a rectangle and one square) in reverse order. - 10/14

The larger panels are well placed because they provide just a little more context to the situation visually without simple exposition. - 11/14

Panel 7 demonstrates that the chase through the mushroom forest (which has knocked down more mushrooms) has confused the other dinosaurs. They look around totally in shock, trying to figure out what is going on. - 12/14

Some of the creatures are really cool (and I think we've seen that pink polkadotted fellow before…) and are very McCay. I wish we could see more of them! - 13/14

This is my reading of "In the Land of Wonderful Dreams" #403. What's yours? - 14/14
