Day #369: Impie Hurt His Head

"In the Land of Wonderful Dreams" dated January 12, 1913:

After a brief one week hiatus to start off the New Year, this strip brought Nemo into the year 1913! - 1/15

I actually don't have a ton to say here; the gags are mostly just a series of unfortunate events… no one is to blame for anything that happens, really. - 2/15

The way that the events of this strip unfold is part of the humour. When Pill and Figures fall into the water, the action on the dock takes precedence. As that calamity is occurring, Pill and Figures just casually climb out of the water. - 3/15

Their arrival back on the dock, while Nemo and the gang are all tangled up in then life preserver is actually quite funny. - 4/15

The title incident of this strip occurs at the same time there when Impie walks into (I think…) a pole, bumping his head. - 5/15

I'm interested in why Impie's accident is the title one? Flip and Nemo have also both fallen or tripped and Pill and Figures fall into the drink plays a more vital role in the strip than does Impie's accident. - 6/15

It *is* the only one that has enamata reinforcing it, so maybe it was the most severe injury of the group? Also, Nemo comments on it in the penultimate panel, as well (mirroring the title). - 7/15

A few other things to mention, as well.. - 8/15

This Professor Figures reminds me strikingly of the Dancing Missionary from our time at the Herald/the Herbert Musical… clearly though, he is a new character. - 9/15

While his name is appropriate for someone who "created arithmetic", he's an entirely uninteresting character (to me at least) because his design is so similar to one's we've seen before. Where is the pizzazz, Winsor? - 10/15

The penultimate panel features another Candy Kid announcing to the group that King wants to see them at once; their long absence has concerned him. - 11/15

I always sort of fear returning to Slumberland because it might mean losing part of the group… though, I'll admit, if we could get rid of Pill and keep the rest of our group you'd have no complaints from me… - 12/15

Finally, are arguably most interestingly, is the fact that Nemo considers this dream a "nightmare". Upon waking, he says "I wish I could have a nice dream once in a while instead of the nightmare." - 13/15

This dream doesn't seem particularly frightening, so I have to wonder what it is about it that elicits this response from Nemo? Is it just the calamity and injuries that we witnessed? Is it just that it ends so abruptly and quickly? - 14/15

This is my reading of "In the Land of Wonderful Dreams" #369. What's yours? - 15/15
