Day #364: They Looked Like Pirates at That.

"In the Land of Wonderful Dreams" dated December 01, 1912:

A classic case of mistaken identity coupled with some really good teamwork, plus pirates and you've for a recipe for a pretty fun strip! - 1/15

I can't undersell that teamwork either; the group works really well today. The only one who really gets "left out" of the work is the Princess… every other character does something (carrying guns, hoisting the mast, etc.)… - 2/15

This isn't for lack of trying on her part. I actually like how she refuses to just stand by and be a passive bystander… even when Pill patronizingly tells her to be calm (twice), she wants to know what they're doing. - 3/15

I've always been fond of the Princess' character and liked how she was assertive and, at the very least, refused to simply tag along… here is another example of her fighting to be included in the efforts of the group. - 4/15

It doesn't *really* work in this strip, to be honest… but that isn't so much the point for me. It's more that she tries (panel 4, 5, and 9 especially). Now if only the group would be more forthcoming with the plan so she could get involved! - 5/15

The penultimate panel is interesting because they don't seem to recognize the group… the Admiral calls Flip "the green faced guy" and Pill "the old guy"… if they were from the Royal Navy of Slumberland, wouldn't they recognize them? - 6/15

We've seen in the past how widely recognizable Flip, Nemo, and the gang are even outside of Slumberland so it's peculiar that they are not recognized. - 7/15

Could this be setting up something really interesting? A potential new geographic within the dreamscape? Maybe they are simply (Dre)Americans? - 8/15

I'm not sure, but I'm intrigued by this group… they were clearly after Capt. Kidd (evidenced by panel 6) so maybe they're the British Navy (Kidd was Scottish)? I wonder if we'll get an answer… - 9/15

Finally, we need to briefly discuss panel 7. As the pirates sleep, they have thought balloons above their heads with images inside! - 10/15

Now, thought balloons are nothing knew to comics at this point and I'd even be willing to bet that populating them with images had even been done before (though I'm not totally certain about that)… - 11/15

…, but I find these really interesting because they are a dream within a dream; they invite the reader to experience the dream (albeit in a very limited way) the dreaming of a dream-character. - 12/15

What does it mean that Nemo's dreams have dreams? The implications of this could be, potentially, quite massive… - 13/15

I'm going to leave this question open-ended and hope to hear some of your thoughts about it! - 14/15

This is my reading of "In the Land of Wonderful Dreams" #364. What's yours? - 15/15
