Day #360: Flip is Very Fond of Ice Cream! So is Impie!

"In the Land of Wonderful Dreams" dated October 20, 1912:

There are so many small details worth discussing in this strip, that I don't even know where to begin… I'm sure that I'm going to miss somethings, but I’ll discuss the ones that really stood out for me and look forward to the rest of your thoughts, as well! - 1/20

Starting right off the top: Do you think the Princess intentionally created the ice cream as a distraction to Flip and Impie? - 2/20

The ice cream's appearance is suspect, because she verbally claims that her wish is for Aladdin to arrive and take the lamp back when she rubs it. So, why does the ice cream appear? - 3/20

Could she be *thinking* a wish for the ice cream to appear as a distraction? - 4/20

I just find it quite odd that her and Pill almost immediately slink away once the ice cream shows up… they aren't interested in what it is at all… - 5/20

If this is the case, it works… maybe too well. Because not only are Flip and Impie enthralled by it, but Nemo sticks around to enjoy it, as well! - 6/20

Panel 6 is interesting for a couple reasons. First, Aladdin's skin is noticeably darker than it has been previously represented as. Also, Aladdin claims to be afraid of Flip. - 7/20

This is pretty understandable… he's been chased by him, had his lamp stolen by him, been shot out of the sky by him… it's been quite a journey. - 8/20

When he invites the Princess on a visit to his home, she sends a Candy Kid (is this the first Candy Kid we've seen at the NY American?) to get Nemo to come back and join them. - 9/20

When Nemo reaches the Princess and Pill he agrees to join the group to go to Aladdin's house because he wants to see him "rub his lamp when Flip is not around." - 10/20

We've seen examples of all three of these characters, at different points in the series, willing to leave Flip (and Impie by extension) behind for the sake of their experiences, but rarely do we see all three on the same page in the same strip. - 11/20

Couple that with a capable character, the Princess, (possibly) creating and enacting the plan and you have Flip and Impie, fat from devouring the massive bowl of ice cream, unable to follow them… - 12/20

Of course, even the best laid plans don't always pan out and, as they fall out of the ice cream dish, Flip and Impie scare the camel! - 13/20

What actually happens when the camel is scared, I'm not sure… doe she just bolt? Is he tipping over? Nemo doesn't wake up on the floor so I *think* it's the first one? - 14/20

Visually, the final tier is just great. The polyptych is cool and I enjoy how natural it makes the flow of Flip and Impie spilling out of the bowl onto the ground. - 15/20

I'm also intrigued by the sphynx and pyramids depicted. Again, it brings up the geography of the dreamscape question… - 16/20

Previously, we were close to the Slumberland palace (after having returned from the Summer House), but it seems as though we've progressively moved away from it. - 17/20

Which would explain the situation… had the Candy Kid not called Nemo to the palace earlier in this very strip (panel 7). Is this a different palace or the same? - 18/20

Either way, there is an interesting blurring between the boundaries here as the Egyptian elements begin to invade the dreamscape… maybe it's nothing more than an indication of where we're heading? - 19/20

This is my reading of "In the Land of Wonderful Dreams" #360. What's yours? - 20/20
