This strip is really a "don’t-think-too-hard-because-its-a-dream" sorta strip. There are parts to like and also some problematic elements, but it's a bit better than yesterdays. - 1/18
Aladdin's whitewashing is much more evident in this strip than it was last week; you can clearly see (in almost every panel that he's in) the whiteness of his depiction. - 2/18
That said, though he creates the bubble that takes Nemo, the Princess, and Doctor Pill on their journey, he isn't really the centre of this strip at all. - 3/18
Flip, who never seems to "get scared", gives up the lamp immediately in panel one after the chaos of the last strip. He seems fearful of it, and even says he'd rather play with a "firecracker". - 4/18
This is uncharacteristic for Flip who takes a rather massive sized step away from them as Aladdin begins to work the lamp. - 5/18
This doesn't stop him from returning to form pretty quickly though; not only does he disagree with being left behind by his two friends and frenemy, but he formulates a plan to "burst their bubble", as well… - 6/18
He and Impie (who Flip actively speaks to and includes throughout this strip) end up creating cannon balls using Flip's new clay pipe. - 7/18
Clearly, McCay is playing with the bubble dynamic created by the soap bubble transport, but I was immediately questioning how Flip and Impie were able to create this ammunition… - 8/18
Of course, It is a dream and doesn't need to make complete sense. The surrealism actually works here and the fact that there is no explanation makes me enjoy it even that little bit more! - 9/18
Sometimes, understanding it takes the fun out of it, you know? - 10/18
Flip's concern for Impie throughout this strip is really meaningful, I think. Not only does he urge him to come along with him, but also warns him of the impending cannon shot: "Look out Impie!!! Stand back!" - 11/18
It is a very welcome change from the strip/characters basically ignoring him for large amounts of time. - 12/18
Formally, I just want to mention that the colour holds in then bubble are *mostly* well done (panel 5 is a little off). - 13/18
This is sort of surprising, given that I think it's been coloured by the colourist that we've been particularly critical of over the last little while. - 14/18
Is this indicative of his improving talents? It is FAR from Herald-quality, but are we witnessing (across time) this colourist improve his craft, slowly but surely? - 15/18
It really is an intriguing though, and something that makes this strip pretty exciting. Narrative aside, the formal question it fosters has many interesting implications. - 16/18
Finally, I wonder if those sleeping guards are going to be fired… - 17/18
This is my reading of "In the Land of Wonderful Dreams" #356. What's yours? - 18/18
