Day #335: Flip and the Magic Flute

"In the Land of Wonderful Dreams" dated May 05, 1912:

After reading the title, I genuinely thought that we might be getting some Mozart allusions… but this ain't Tamino's Magic Flute and there are no Queens of the Night's shattering glass with their arias. - 1/12

That said, enjoy one of my favourite duets from "Die Zauberflute": - 2/12

Now, back to the strip… I really don't have a ton to say about this strip. It's formally simple and doesn't really do anything overly new. - 3/13

Flip is back to his thieving ways; he steals the flute from the fella in panels 1 and 2 claiming "that flute belongs to me"… With this latest theft, Flip's belief that the items he desires become his continues a troubling pattern of behaviour… - 4/13

I suppose that, if anything is particularly intriguing about this strip, it is how polite and kind Doctor Pill is to Flip before he gets drenched with water. - 5/13

He compliments Flip on being "clever" and is eager to listen to his music… of course, when he becomes the butt-end of the joke (water spray) he isn't as happy. - 6/13

I'm really not sure what's going on with the big guy that comes out of the flute… was he sleeping in there? Did Flip's awful music wake him up? - 7/13

He is clearly not happy to have been disturbed as he tosses Flip in the penultimate panel. Flip's final comment in panel 11, I must admit, made me chuckle. - 7/8/13

The group sort of just watches it all unfold from the background. Nemo's comment ("It's pretty hard to hurt Flip…") is likely the reason why they don't feel the need to intervene. - 9/1

Admittedly, not even Flip seems very concerned as he's soaring through the air insulting the big fella who hurled him. There's no reason to think Flip is in any real danger here. - 10/13

Just as a final point, I want to say that this is one of the better coloured NY American strips. The costumes are bright and really pop in combination with the art nouveau lines. - 11/13

The inconsistency of colour quality at Hearst's paper continues to be very noticeable. The higher quality one should be noted. - 12/13

This is my reading of "In the Land of Wonderful Dreams" #335. What's yours? - 13/13
