It's Christmas Eve 1911 and, though we celebrated Christmas in Slumberland last week, McCay has some winter shenanigans in store for us today! - 1/18
Yet again, Doctor Pill has a scheme intent on keeping Flip as far away from him, the Princess, and Nemo as possible. This time, involving massive snow cannons! - 2/18
It seems as though he has completely ignored the Princess' declaration for Flip to join them last week, and is now operating purely out of self-interest… he dislikes Flip, so Flip must be kept away. - 3/18
Gone is the pretense that it will wake Nemo up. Gone is the pretense that the Princess and Nemo want to spend time alone… these strips have become just a pure rock 'em, sock 'em, no punches pulled feud. - 4/18
And that isn't a complaint! I actually find this strip quite interesting. - 5/18
This isn't the first time that we've seen a massive snowball fight, though! Remember all the way back in 1907 at Jack Frost's palace: - 6/18
Though not a direct callback, I can't help but remember the fun trip to Jack Frost's palace that these three friends had way back when… now, they're being kept apart… thanks Pill. - 7/18
Flip does take his comeuppance in panel 4, but he rallies quickly and plots his revenge… this time, he purchases a massive magnifying glass with which to melt the cannons… and fry Doctor Pill. - 8/18
I was really taken aback by this development… why buy a magnifying glass when he could just call upon his Uncle, the Dawn Guard, to deal with this? - 9/18
One possibility is that calling him would melt *all* of Slumberland, and Flip had specific targets in mind… - 10/18
Another possibility is that the NY American version of #LittleNemo's adventures… doesn't have a Dawn Guard? His existence does depend wholly on the Herald strips so we can't simply assume he's around (if this is a reboot). - 11/18
Either way, Flip wielding the power of the sun is nothing new (recall that in the Herald strips, it was revealed that Flip is the sun's son… again, we can't assume that is still the case here if this is a soft reboot, but it's worth noting). - 12/18
While we get a panel explaining his purchase of the magnifying glass, we're left to just wonder at where he got the airship from which he uses it… - 13/18
Previously, we've wondered about whether Slumberlandians can die or not… does this strip put that question to rest? I mean… if the magnifying glass can "burn a hole through steel" and "melt stone" what chance does Pill have? - 14/18
He is taking the full force of that magnification of the sun for three full panels, which seems like a death sentence if he actually can die! - 15/18
I can't really tell what's going on under that light, but he doesn't seem to be *too* bad… In pain? Certainly. But the things one might expect from a body under intense heat doesn't *seem* to be happening… - 16/18
Let's see how he looks next strip, shall we? - 17/18
This is my reading of "In the Land of Wonderful Dreams" #319. What's yours? -18/18
