This strip is a blast… both literally AND figuratively! - 1/12
Most notably, the whole "if Nemo sees Flip he wakes up" thing seems to have been dropped entirely here… Flip runs *right* passed Nemo and the strip goes right on going! - 2/12
It really is all about the antagonistic relationship between Flip and Doctor Pill now… Flip fights off not one, not two, but THREE Slumberland policemen in an attempt to get to DP and give him a soaking. - 3/12
And you can't say that Flip cares all that much about just reaching the Princess because he runs right past her, as well! Nope… it's allllllll about getting revenge on DP. - 4/12
Panel 8 is really interesting, because Flip reveals that he was, at one point in his life, a firefighter! Did we know this about him? Has he revealed this tidbit of information about himself in the past? - 5/12
He does certainly seem to have expert handling of the hose as a weapon… he turns it right on to DP in panel 10 and just lets loose… soaking Nemo, the Princess and… well, everyone… in the process. - 6/12
The soaking isn't the only thing he hits DP with in this strip though… in panel 3, it seems as though he throws a brick (?) at him and cracks him in his hat. - 7/12
But it clearly isn't enough to repay the insult he's suffered by having the hose turns against him in panel 2… so Flip begins his revenge. - 8/12
The fact that he just simply doesn't care about anyone who gets soaked in the process, or that the parade is ruined by his interreference, signals Flip's single-minded determination. We've seen it before, but it's quite well displayed here. - 9/12
The Princess is horrified that she is soaking wet in the penultimate panel, but it is Nemo who gets cracked with the full force of the hose. - 10/12
This, of course, instigates his waking from Slumberland and serves as a fun wake-up gag. We've seen water used to wake him up before, but this one is particularly funny (I think, anyway). - 11/12
This is my reading of "In the Land of Wonderful Dreams" #317. What's yours? - 12/12
