Our Canadian sightseeing adventures continue today in Quebec City, Quebec! - 1/30
Before we talk about today's adventures, let's quickly look at the postcard Nemo sends to Montreal! There's actually a fair bit to unpack here. - 2/30
First, Nemo's becoming progressively more literary and stylistic in his postcard writing. Here, he even uses a paradox to drive home how highly he thought of Montreal in the winter. - 3/30
Secondly, it is the only time that he's promised to send *another* postcard to a destination he'd previously visited in a continuous manner. - 4/30
Was he that enamoured with the city that he wants to initiate a continuous conversation with the children there? It's interesting. - 5/30
Finally, this is the first card that isn't just signed by Nemo… but also Flip! - 6/30
On top of this, it's interesting that the young children of Quebec really take notice of Flip, as well as Nemo. @AlexxKay mentioned yesterday that "Flip's star was rising" and I think this proves it! - 7/30
Now, I really enjoy this strip as a sightseeing adventure, because it corrects the Montreal strips reliance on talking about the locations (though it still does that) by making sure they visit some, as well. - 8/30
More than this though, McCay also builds in some recreational time for the group and allows them a chance to unwind by enjoying some skating time! - 9/30
It's here that Flip falls in love with the ice yachts! - 10/30
In panel 4, the young boy makes mention of the following Quebec City tourist destinations. - 11/30
The Citadel: - 12/30
Dufferin Terrace: - 13/30
Governor's Garden: - 14/30
The Wolfe-Montcalm Monument: - 15/30
And finally, The Golden Dog, or Le Chien D'or, which is a reference to the famous bas-relief depicting a golden dog chewing a bone found in Upper Town: - 16/30
Now, there is some uncertainty surrounding the hotel "300 feet above the St. Lawrence river" that the young fella mentions, but I'd be willing to put a hefty wager on the Chateau Frontenac: - 17/30
He also mentions that Quebec is the "Gibraltar of [North] America", which is something that I had never heard of… but is, apparently, very true (thanks for the history lesson… *checks notes*… Uhaul…)! - 18/30
From here, the group sees an example of Quebec's famous fortification ins the St. Louis Gate (for more on the remaining ramparts/fortification in Quebec see here): - 19/30
And ends the tour with the Parliament buildings of Quebec: - 20/30
Now, as we reach panel 10, we see Impie for the very first time this strip. - 21/30
It's rather frustrating to see Flip becoming so renowned and recognizable while McCay has continued to stymie Impie's involvement in the fun for quite some time now… - 22/30
Then I got to wondering if, *maybe*, Impie was choosing to stay behind because it was too cold? He hasn't really been involved on the group since Boston (also very cold) and maybe he just decided it wasn't for him? - 23/30
Might we see Impie become more active again when we reach warmer adventures? I guess time will tell. - 24/30
Truthfully, this feels like making excuses for McCay (and I'm not really into that), but it was a thought I had while reading and thought I'd share. - 25/30
I suppose, whether I buy it or not, doesn't really matter… we'll have to see whether the text supports this potential reading down the line… - 26/30
I'll just end by mentioning that Flip's reaction to Parliament Hill in Ottawa was incredibly complementary and I enjoyed it very much! - 27/30
Ottawa is the capital of this fair country that I call home and I've been to Parliament Hill many a times. It is as stunning in person as McCay's rendering makes it seem! - 28/30
It also has a very rich history including a fire and major reconstruction. If interested, more on that here: - 29/30
This is my reading of "Little Nemo in Slumberland" #277. What's yours? - 30/30
