Ugh… last strip, Impie was the last one willing to dive into this field of roses and today he's the one who has to get the worst of the entire event… - 1/14
It starts out simple (if not slightly horrifying) enough with some larger than normal insects to go along with the larger than normal flowers. - 2/14
But, as the Secretary informs us, this is somewhat irregular. Apparently, there are no children because the bugs are running rampant. This causes the Secretary to wonder where the policeman is. - 3/14
It seems as though it is his job to coral the insects? But, a massive bee has escaped the Martian zoo… - 4/14
Why does the bee (whose stinger is on it's nose rather than it's behind) go straight for Impie? - 5/14
I don't like seeing poor Impie in pain like this and McCay does one heck of a job convincing me that that bee sting hurts… - 6/14
In panel 5, we see, for the first time, the massive proboscis that this Martian bee is sporting and in panel 6, we see just how far it has dug it into Impie's head. - 7/14
His face, throughout the entire bottom tier, is just heartbreaking. - 8/14
Interestingly though, Flip acts as his saviour by burning the bee with a cigar (when did he start smoking these again?). The fact that it isn't Nemo is intriguing… - 9/14
In fact, Nemo doesn't even stop to ask how his friend is after the bee is defeated. Impie clearly has a piece of the stinger still in his head (as shown by the jagged break on the bee's nose/stinger), but Nemo only cares about the 4th of July. - 10/14
This seems a bit cold to me… but at least Flip seems to care; he mentions that he doesn't blame Impie for swearing because the bee was massive. - 11/14
Does this imply that Flip is starting to understand Impie's language? Maybe. But it could also just be in reference to his vocal expression of pain. - 12/14
Lastly, this strip explains why the fourth of July theme started last strip; they're on the WAY to a celebration… I guess that means, tomorrow will be a doozy! - 13/14
This is my reading of "Little Nemo in Slumberland" #246. What's yours? - 14/14
