Day #244: License... to Live?

"Little Nemo in Slumberland" dated June 12, 2021:

Transcript of Tweets by @LittleNemo1905 (FEBRUARY 8, 2021):

I don't actually have much to say about this strip… mainly because I find it a little bit unclear. - 1/10

Like, I get the sunshine thing and the plant holding it thing, but the action is a bit hard to actually follow (in my opinion)… for instance, I'm not really sure where the fire is… - 2/10

Using the grey ships as an anchor, I think the group has moved very far down from where they were in panel 1, which makes sense, but is a clunky use of closure, I think… it's just not overly easy to follow because the picto-geographical and temporal jump is so big. - 3/10

That said, we do learn some narrative tidbits. For example, Mars is in perpetual sunshine and, as a result, darkness is really scary to the Martians… without it, the people pile onto Nemo's airship in droves for a ride to somewhere sunny. - 4/10

Here, Nemo again plays the hero by letting them fly out of the darkness (when the Secretary wants to boot them off)… but it doesn't all work out because the Secretary tells us that they'll all be arrested anyway for being in "real" as opposed to the stored sunshine. - 5/10

Worse than this though… we learn that these Martians needs a license… to LIVE?! - 6/10

As the Secretary tells us about how these poor people can't speak because they can't afford words… we learn they can barely afford their license to live. This is… well, it shouldn't be surprising given everything else, but wow. - 7/10

It would almost seem as though we've moved on from political commentary about capitalist greed and have begun to enter the realm of totalitarian dictatorships and government tyranny. - 8/10

These Martians live a very restricted life; every single aspect intrinsically linked to Mr. Gosh… I wasn't sure if there was a government on Mars previously, but now I think it's impossible to untangle Gosh's corporate monopoly from the politics of the planet. - 9/10

This is my reading of "Little Nemo in Slumberland" #244. What’s yours? - 10/10
