Day #212: Let it Snow! Let it Snow! Let it Snow!

"Little Nemo in Slumberland" dated October 31, 1909:

Transcript of Tweets by @LittleNemo1905 (JANUARY 7, 2021):

For a surprisingly uninteresting visual strip, there is a lot going on here… most of it is being delivered through the text/linguistic communication, but we nevertheless have some pretty interesting moments throughout. - 1/13

For starters, it turns out that Doctor Pill's gun wasn't as empty as they'd originally thought… - 2/13

The strip begins with a tight continuity; picking up almost exactly where the last strip left off (though the animals seem less interested in blocking their progression). Panel 2 immediately sees their dispersal when DP's gun goes off! - 3/13

This leaves the gang in an empty barren space. Tier 2 is really brilliant as the background changes from the warm tones of orange and yellow in panel one to the cold tones of blacks and blue in panel 5. It goes a really great job of communicating a sense of temperature change through visuals. - 4/13

Now, the snow quickly begins to pile up and we soon discover that DP and DM are… lost. The strip ends with them pondering their next move and Nemo waking up to his mother's suggestion that he's cold because his covers have come off (I love this bit or blurriness between dream and reality). - 5/13

Along the way, DP can't shake his upset at the events that transpired in tier 1 with the animals. But… I'm not *entirely* sure what he's upset about… - 6/13

It seems as points that he might be upset for the animals caught in the accidental crossfire ("It was so unsportsmanlike", panel 7), but at other times seems it's his carelessness that bothers him ("It was careless of me, panel 8)… I mean, he is walking with four children. Maybe he's upset that he could've harmed one of them? - 7/13

Ya, I doubt it's that one too. He'd probably be all to pleased to be rid of his nemesis, Flip. - 8/13

Speaking of which… the two have gotten along fairly well recently… given their negative past, I'm sort of surprised I didn't notice this before. Is it because DP has chosen to ignore Flip? He never responds when Flip speaks to him? - 9/13

Another moment that stuck out to me was Nemo's declaration in panel 6: "I'm crazy to see the Princess again!". It has been quite sometime since he's been able to spend any real time with the Princess and that is obviously bothering him. - 10/13

Their relationship has seemingly grown stronger since they've been apart… I am quite excited for their reunion proper. - 11/13

I'll end just by mentioning the snow drifts (or mountains?) in the penultimate panel. They're quite beautiful and, if the boys are going to be lost with DP and DM, at least there's a view? - 12/13

This is my reading of "Little Nemo in Slumberland" #212. What's yours? - 13/13
