I think what I admire the most about this strip is the boys genuine curiosity… and the fact that it hasn't been pounded out of them after the last few strips… - 1/10
I think they'd be forgiven for being a little extra cautious… maybe even fearful… but the only one that hesitates in any meaningful way is the Professor (whose been pretty hesitant for weeks now). - 2/10
What I love most about this strip though, is that I read it as an exercise in meaning making. - 3/10
Notice how Flip and Nemo are both trying to come to a better understanding about what's happening? - 4/10
In panel 4, for instance, Nemo wonders aloud who might be doing this to them and, in panel 5, makes a prediction about the intentions of the events (actions by Slumberland to scare Flip away). - 5/10
Meanwhile, Flip engages in predictions about the emerging mountain… he thinks it might be a mole hill and even goes up to look down into its opening in panel 6. - 6/10
It isn't until new information is presented (heat) that the boys renegotiate their interpretations (or at least Flip's) and do they realize it's a volcano! - 7/10
Even this doesn't make Nemo afraid, however, saying he'd like to stay and watch it erupt in panel 10! - 8/10
I really love the tonal shift from panel 9 to 10… the eruptions itself is quite something, but the shift in colour and the falling rocks really kicks it up a notch! - 9/10
This is my reading of "Little Nemo in Slumberland" #197. What's yours? - 10/10
