This is one of the weirder New Years Eve strips that we've come across so far, and the first that takes place outside of Slumberland. - 1/12
The strip does some interesting things with scale and size here, manipulating it panel by panel in order to suggest Nemo's growth in height. - 2/12
It's interesting to me that the background changes so, but Nemo is framed exactly the same throughout all the first tier panels. - 3/12
As a result, it took me a second to really figure out what was going on here… if you use the top of the house as an anchor point, it start to become clear as the panels progress. - 4/12 [INSERT IMAGE]
That said, there is much more to it than that… I also love the streets that appear in panel 4-6… As Nemo grows taller/bigger, he seems to be able to see farther and farther. - 5/12
It caused me to renegotiate the meaning that I'd attributed to his slipping off the stoop (originally I thought it was just icy), which I particularly enjoyed. - 6/12
Now the transition from panel 6-7 is quite dramatic as he goes from big to gargantuan (big enough to hang on the globe)… - 7/12
As 1908 says his goodbyes and 1909 appears he just keeps getting bigger and the earth smaller… What do we make of this? - 8/12
My reading is fairly simple (as kids age they get bigger and learn to see/understand more about the world causing it to, in some ways, get smaller because it's mystery diminishes by the day)… - 9/12
I'm not sold on it though; I feel like there must be more to it than that, no? - 10/12
I'd be really eager to hear what you all think of this strip… why does 1908 fall off the earth? Why does Nemo grow so big and what is Nemo's growth suggesting? - 11/12
This is my reading of "Little Nemo in Slumberland" #168. What's yours? - 12/12
