Day #136: The Elephant's Flip Flip's Auto

"Little Nemo in Slumberland" dated May 17, 1908:

Winsor! You're KILLING us here… what in the world were you trying to accomplish with these strips?! - 1/10

This is the third strip, in a row, that is founded upon the exact same gag (Flip's auto isn't working)… as if anyone bought what he was selling in panel 1 when he claimed it to be fixed… - 2/10

The perspective is identical to the other three strips (Nemo and Mary in the bottom left watching the parade), which still doesn't make sense to me! - 3/10

They aren't on an endless promenade; it's a balcony (which they're in the corner of as Impy and Flip's landing indicate)… so, when they walk away in the penultimate panel of each strip so far… where are they going!? Another balcony? - 4/10

I just don't get how we're seeing new parts of the parade if they're walking in the same direction as the parade each time… it's bugging me… - 5/10

I mean, the elephants are wonderful, but they just don't make up for the absolutely monotony of this series… it's really unfortunate. - 6/10

Part of me wonders if that was the point? Was McCay trying to affect the reader in exactly the way we're being affected? Ultimately, as always, it doesn't really matter if he intended it or not… but it's working. - 7/10

Finally, what in the world were McCay/Hunt thinking when they decided to colour the mahout's gray? I checked Taschen too and that's how they're depicted in it, as well. - 8/10

I've no explanation for it… anyone else have thoughts or a potential explanation? - 9/10

This is my reading of "Little Nemo in Slumberland" #136. What's yours? - 10/10
